Top 5 Small Appliances for the Kitchen

Top 5 Small Appliances for Your Kitchen

I think we can all agree that there are certain appliances a kitchen just has to have. Appliances that make our lives easier and make cooking more of a joy and less of a chore. So here are my top 5 choices for the year.

1. Stand mixer.
They are bulky and heavy. They take up space counter. That used to be the way I thought about the stand mixer. They brought to mind images of women trapped in their kitchen, endlessly cooking. That was before I got one. The stand mixer is probably one of the most freeing small appliances I own. I pour the ingredients into the wide bowl, slide the lever to the power level I want and walk away to do something else for a moment. It is also faster than any hand mixer on the market and has enough power to mix bread dough.

The one I own is the Kitchen Aid Artisan (pictured). You can read my review here.

2. Hot Pot.
Hot Pot
Not quite a kettle, not quite a pot, faster than a microwave. Hot pots have been taking college dorms and kitchens by storm. I bought one for my daughter this Christmas to quickly cook herself soups, vegetables and coffee. She took it a step farther and experiment with noodles and potatoes, which both cooked well. The hot pot holds 32 ounces of water which is the same as most small pots, but comes to a boil 60% faster than a microwave.

3. Electric Knife
Slicing through homemade bread neatly. Carving turkey, chicken, roast and ham. My electric knife has been invaluable over the years. Although they seem to be going a little out of style I wouldn’t want to live without one. The Black and Decker electric knife I purchased is still going strong 7 years later.

4. Indoor grill.
Cuisinart GR4
I don’t have one yet, but I am working on it. When I walk into the house of a friend who does own one and smell the delicious odour of indoor barbecued steak or chicken I am filled with envy. I too want to barbecue in the winter. I am not talking one of the little grills either. I want something big. Big enough to barbecue for the size family I have without taking up the entire evening like the Cuisinart GR4.

5. Turkey Roaster
Turkey Roaster

Turkey dinner without the oven scheduling dilemma. For years I have struggled with timing. Finally I feel like I am on top of it. With the meat in a separate roaster the oven is once again free to bake buns and desserts to go along with dinner, and it no longer takes two days to prepare for a special holiday dinner.
